In Bordeaux, the Jacques Chaban-Delmas lift bridge redefines urban mobility and the city\u2019s dialogue with the river.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The lift bridge of the city of Bordeaux, dedicated to Jacques Chaban Delmas, mayor of the city for 48 years, radically transformed traffic and the habits of two districts that had long been divided by the Garonne River. It also ensures river navigability for large ships, allowing them to pass beneath the central span when it is raised by more than 40 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design proposal connects the two banks of the Garonne through a deck made up of three structurally independent spans, manufactured at the San Giorgio di Nogaro plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lift bridge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The lift bridge of the city of Bordeaux, dedicated to Jacques Chaban Delmas, mayor of the city for 48 years, radically transformed traffic and the habits of two districts that had long been divided by the Garonne River. It also ensures river navigability for large ships, allowing them to pass beneath the central span when it is raised by more than 40 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The design proposal connects the two banks of the Garonne through a deck made up of three structurally independent spans, manufactured at the San Giorgio di Nogaro plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The central span is enclosed within four reinforced concrete pylons that house the system of cables, pulleys and counterweights that allow it to be lifted. The lifting operation is driven by electromechanical winches located at the base of the pylons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The main structural frame of the deck consists of a longitudinal backbone from which cantilever beams branch out, like fishbones, supporting the lateral pedestrian walkways. This reflects the architectural concept of separating the central artery dedicated to motor vehicle traffic from the areas intended for cyclists and pedestrians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The length of the deck, between the supports located on the Rive Droite abutment, defined as abutment \u201cC5\u201d, and the Rive Gauche abutment, identified as abutment \u201cC0\u201d, is 433 metres, while the clear span of the movable central span, the lifting girder, measures 117.4 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The central span is connected to the abutments by two composite steel-concrete decks, each consisting of a continuous beam on three supports: the abutment, an intermediate reinforced concrete pier and the base structure of the pylons located at the four corners of the central span.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n
